Shelby Foote ably fashions a drama as modern as todays newspaper, as old as Mosaic law.New York Times
With impeccable detail, Foote delves into the moral decay of the American moneyed class. Tom Parkers performance lends an amused presence to Footes scenario. Parker precisely captures Jeff and Amys pretense of virtue, the Majors disdain for those he considers below him, and the fading values of the next and future generations. AudioFile
Shelby Footes magnificently orchestrated novel anticipates much of the subject matter of his monumental Civil War trilogy, rendering the clash between North and South with a violence all the more shocking for its intimacy. Love in a Dry Season describes an erotic and economic triangle, in which two wealthy and fantastically unhappy Mississippi familiesthe Barcrofts and the Carruthersesare joined by an open-faced fortune hunter from the North, a man whose ruthlessness is matched only by his inability to understand the people he tries to exploit and his fatal incomprehension of the passions he so causally ignites. Combining a flawless sense of place with a Faulknerian command of the grotesque, Footes novel turns a small cotton town into a sexual battleground as fatal as Vicksburg or Shilohand one where strategy is no match for instinct and tradition.
Shelby Foote comes from a long line of Mississippians. He was born in Greenville, and attended school there until he entered the University of North Carolina. During World War II he served in the European theater as a captain of field artillery. He has written six novels—Tournament, Shiloh, Love in a Dry Season, Follow Me Down, Jordan County and September September. He was awarded three Guggenheim fellowships in the twenty-year course of writing his monumental three-volume history The Civil War: A Narrative.
Tom Parker, recipient of the Golden Voice award, records a remarkable variety of books while pursuing his love of theater by directing two or three professional stage productions a year in the Washington, D.C., area.
